Vice-President of The Parliament meets WRC Executive Director

INTENSIVE COOPERATION ON ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN AND INCREASING THE NUMBER OF WOMEN IN DECISION-MAKING PLACES

At the meeting held in the Parliament of Montenegro,  Dr. Branka Bošnjak, Vice President of the Parliament of Montenegro and Maja Raičević, WRC Executive Director discussed the economic and social empowerment of women and increasing the number of women in decision-making positions.

Possibilities for intensifying cooperation were discussed, especially in improving regulations for combating gender-based violence, and establishing the Alimony Fund as priority activities, including the initiative of Vice President Bošnjak for the establishment of the Women’s Club in the Parliament of Montenegro.

WRC Executive Director welcomed the adopted amendments to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament of Montenegro, which are partially in line with the requests WRC addressed to the President of the Parliament of Montenegro in September 2020, as they promote greater visibility of women in leading positions in the Parliament. She also informed the Vice President about the WRC initiative to amend the Law on Election of Councilors and Deputies, which was submitted to the Parliament of Montenegro, and which proposes the obligation of political parties to have at least 40% of women on electoral lists (among  every  three candidates in the list there is at least one woman). Vice President Bošnjak gave full support to this initiative.

The consequences of the corona virus pandemic were also discussed, regarding the increase in violence against women in conditions of restricted movement as well as the consequences on work and employment, bearing in mind that about six thousand women lost their jobs since the pandemic outbreak.

Both sides expressed readiness for future intensive cooperation, agreeing that there is a need for women in Montenegro to be more actively involved in changes and solutions that affect the development of a democratic society.
