Protest Letter to the Embassy of Iran in Belgrade

Human Rights Action(HRA) and Women’s Rights Center (WRC) y=sent a letter of protest to the Iranian ambassador in Belgrade responsible for Montenegro, due to the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the Iranian “moral police” during the implementation of strict hijab rules, as and the brutal violation of human rights by Iranian security forces at the peaceful protests following the death of a young woman, which has so far led to the deaths of at least 130 people, including children.
Thousands of people are protesting in cities across Iran demanding accountability for the death of Mahsa Amini, and an end to violence and discrimination against women in Iran.

We condemn any unnecessary and disproportionate use of force against the protesters and express our solidarity with all those who stand for human rights, and especially with the brave women of Iran who took to the streets to peacefully protest and demand their rights. We also express our deepest condolences to the families of the Iranian protesters who lost their lives in the brutal police actions in response to peaceful demonstrations.

The letter points out that Iran, as a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, must respect the right to life, the prohibition of torture and protect the freedom of expression, assembly and association. The prohibition of torture is absolute in the sense that no exception can be accepted, defended, justified or tolerated under any circumstances.

We appealed to the ambassador that the authorities in Iran immediately stop repressing those who advocate for the realization of human rights to peaceful assembly and the prohibition of discrimination and torture.
