Femicide in 2020
Feminist organizations in the Western Balkans recorded 55 cases of femicide in 2020:
Montenegro – 2 Northern Macedonija – 4 Bosnia and Hercegovina- 7Kosovo – 7 Albania – 9 Serbia – 26
Every other woman was killed by her husband or partner. These women were killed in the house where they lived with the perpetrator. 65% of femicide cases occurred in urban areas and 35% in rural or suburban areas. Every third woman was killed with a firearm: a pistol, an automatic rifle, an explosive device. The risk of femicide increases when women leave abusive husbands or partners. Media reports indicate that in 20% of cases, violence has been previously reported to institutions.
Below you can see the video created within the project supported by the Austrian Development Agency “Institutionalization of quality services to support and integrate women survivors of violence”, which is implemented by the “Women’s Rights Center” in cooperation with the “Autonomous Women’s Center” from Serbia, a project holder and partner organizations from Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Northern Macedonia.
